ATLANTA (March 18, 2015) Clark Atlanta University (CAU) will dedicate four peace benches in the nameof legendary professor Sonia Sanchez on Thursday, March 18, at3 Davage Auditorium in Haven-Warren Hall, 223 James P. Brawley Drive, S.W.Atlanta 30314.Sanchez will be present at the dedication.

Scheduled to be dedicated during CAU’s annual Founders Week, the benches will serve as a place to find peace, and the artwork reflects the peace activism of Dr. W. E. B. Du Bois.  He is a cornerstone in professor Sanchez’s teaching and served CAU for 23 years as a faculty member, administrator, scholar, author and social engineer.

The benches feature haiku poetry byauthors Sanchez, Alice Walker, Toni Morrison, John H. BraceyJr. and Hip Hop superstar Common, among several others, including CAU professors Daniel Black, Ph.D., and Stephanie Y. Evans, Ph.D.   The benches were commissioned byEvans, chair of the Department of Africana Women's Studies, African American Studies, and History (AWH) at Clark Atlanta.CAU art majorDenisha Claxton is the art project director and also contributed a haiku. 

 Sanchez is a poet, mother, professor, national and international lecturer on black culture and literature, women’s liberation, peace and racial justice.  She is the author of more than 16 books and has won numerous awards in the arts and humanities.To view her portfolio, visit
